And it is in these districts, from the Central Valley to the outskirts of Los Angeles and down to Orange County, where the House majority will likely be won or lost in 2024. Republicans currently hold a slim 218-seat majority, a precarious position for the party as the 213-member House Democratic Caucus works to flip the chamber this year. Like in Missouri, Idaho's top Republican senator removed certain Freedom Caucus members from committee leadership posts last November and denounced their disparaging rhetoric against other senators. For a year now in South Carolina, Freedom Caucus members have been excluded from the House Republican caucus — since they refused to go along with party rules that bar them from campaigning against other Republican members. Meanwhile in Georgia, the Senate Republican caucus booted an outspoken Freedom Caucus member who tried to pressure colleagues into impeaching a Democratic prosecutor for indicting Trump.

The move could head off the Washington holiday-season tradition of shutdown dramas and mammoth all-encompassing spending bills. But the chances that a GOP majority that has trouble passing any bill could deliver on this intricate plan seem very low. Time is critically short given the need to muscle a funding measure through both the House and Senate in five days. Trump looms over the House – and the year to comeHouse Democrats are yet to solidify their position but did note Saturday that spending cuts weren’t included in Johnson’s plan. Rep. John Duarte, a vulnerable House Republican, owns a family tree farm in California. His farm is facing a new lawsuit alleging that they deceptively sold the wrong kind of lemon tree. That's on top of an existing 2015 lawsuit alleging that his farm sold defective pistachio trees. Specifically, Turner says that Duarte Trees and Vines — a tree nursery located in California's Central Valley — agreed to sell him 1,860 "8A Lisbon lemon trees," but sold him seedless lemon trees instead. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile an invoice attached to Turner's complaint does corroborate that he was sold 8A Lisbon lemon trees, his suit may have a wrinkle: that type of lemon tree is known to have low seed counts.

A CBS News interview destroyed any chance that Kevin McCarthy had in keeping his job as speaker. But ahead of the vote, McCarthy said that he wasn't entertaining any major concessions from the minority party. After Democratic leaders showed the "Face the Nation" interview to members on Tuesday, McCarthy's remarks angered members from across the party's ideological spectrum. 24 House members have reported spending taxpayer money on their official Twitter accounts this year. A recently-published government report on House members' office spending — encompassing April through June of this year — shows that 19 Republicans and 5 Democrats reported spending official funds on "Twitter Paid Features," recently rebranded as "X Premium." Additionally, the amount of money that offices are spending on Twitter is relatively minuscule compared to other expenses. In addition to lawmakers' personal offices, several House committees have spent money on enhanced Twitter features, including the Committees on the Budget, Financial Services, Oversight and Accountability, and Rules. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will meet with congressional leaders Tuesday as Washington scrambles to lift the debt ceiling with less than a month before the federal government is set to run out of money. Lifting the debt ceiling is necessary for the government to cover spending commitments already approved by Congress and the president and prevent default. But House Republicans have said they will not lift the limit if Biden and lawmakers do not agree to future spending cuts. The White House has stressed that while it is open to discuss spending cuts, it will not negotiate with Republicans on the debt ceiling. If the meeting is indeed a negotiation, then the bill House Republicans passed last month effectively serves as the GOP's opening offer to the White House.
January 6 rioter Jacob Chansley, known as the "QAnon Shaman," has been released from prison early. Chansley was moved to a halfway house in Arizona, his trial lawyer told Insider. Chansley was let out of prison after serving 27 months of his 41-month sentence. Chansley's projected release date from any kind of federal custody is May 25, the Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said. Former New York prosecutor Mark Bederow told Insider that it is "common" for federal inmates to get their sentences lessened under the First Step Act, which was passed in 2018.
Mitch McConnell slammed Fox News for airing Tucker Carlson's misleading portrayal of January 6. He held up a letter from the Capitol Police chief calling the depiction "offensive and misleading." But he notably declined to fault House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for handing over the footage. At the top of his weekly press conference at the Capitol, McConnell produced a print-out of an internal letter from US Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manager describing the footage as "offensive and misleading." But he later declined to criticize House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for handing over 40,000 hours of footage to Carlson in the first place.
Republicans want to cut spending on things like Social Security before raising the debt ceiling. But Warren said that the GOP is running a con game, and Trump's tax cuts should be repealed first. But Senator Elizabeth Warren thinks that it's time to take a look at rolling back tax cuts on the wealthy. "They claim their plan to use the debt ceiling to trigger global economic chaos is about fiscal responsibility. "The House Republican plan for the debt ceiling is about protecting the wealthy and the well-connected from paying their fair share in taxes — nothing more and nothing less."
This year, women will hold all four of the top positions on the House and Senate Appropriations committees for the first time in history. “Oftentimes people say, you know, ‘We need to have women at the table.’ Well, women are the table.”Spending and debt fights loomOver the decades, these women have seen their share of spending fights. But I’m absolutely convinced that we have to stand together,” said Granger, who last week became the first female Republican to chair the House Appropriations Committee. Women, Murray said, are good communicators, and she and her colleagues can translate a big, complicated appropriations bill for everyday Americans. But as a 14-year House Appropriations staffer, she also intimately knows each of the top appropriators and recognizes the significance of this glass-ceiling-shattering moment.
The House of Representatives still has not elected a speaker, and no members have been sworn in. Kevin McCarthy remains at a stand-off with a group of conservatives who oppose his leadership. Now, Democrats are gearing up to stay in Washington until a speaker is chosen. If any leave town, that will lower the threshold of votes required for a Republican to be elected speaker. And for now, Democrats have no desire to help McCarthy — or any Republican, for that matter — claim the gavel.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was spotted chatting with Matt Gaetz on the House floor on Tuesday. "McCarthy was suggesting he could get Dems to walk away to lower his threshold," Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept. Ocasio-Cortez added to Semafor that she told Gosar the same thing she told Gaetz: that her party would not be helping McCarthy out. Rebuking both Gosar and Gaetz, Greene tweeted on Tuesday that "making plans with Democrats is not what any Republican should be doing." Representatives for Gaetz, Gosar, Greene, and Ocasio-Cortez did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
So yeah, I’m proud of it,” McConnell said, hailing it as an “extremely important” win for conservatives. He said it’ll mean they no longer “pay a ransom on the domestic side” in order to secure hefty military spending. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill.. said he’s “disappointed” in the unequal spending levels but argued that the Kentucky Republican was using his leverage. Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., speaks alongside Sens. Democrats say McConnell was pushing for deals due to the rising support in the Democratic Party in recent years to end the filibuster.
Kevin McCarthy even vowed to block House consideration of bills sponsored by GOP senators who voted for it. But a slew of GOP senators voted for it anyway, including 4 who are retiring and 14 who will remain. "Kevin's in a tough spot," Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, a former House Republican and an opponent of the omnibus himself, told CNN's Manu Raju. "Statements like that... is the very reason that some Senate Republicans feel they probably should spare them from the burden of having to govern." Additionally, four Republican senators who voted for the bill are retiring, making the threat meaningless to them.
